“Be Still and Know That I am God”
Read: Psalm 46
God
is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will
not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the sea, though
its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a
river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the most
high dwells. God is within her, she will not fail; God will help her at break
of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts up his voice, the earth
melts. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and
see the works of the Lord, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He
makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the
spear, he burns the shields wit fire. “Be still, and know that I am God; I will
be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” The Lord
Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalm
100: 3
Know
that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are his, we are his people,
the sheep of his pasture.
Life
can be busy. Life can be hard sometimes. For most of us here we are not in the
midst of war, yet this world is in turmoil. Europe is constantly in the news
with threats of war. The Islamic nations threaten the whole world with
terrorist attacks. Closer to home; the devil attacks the church and his people.
Sin breaks relationships, creates discord in the communion of saints and
destroys families. Psalm 46 is Gods answer to our fears. Stop! Stop trying to
figure it all out yourself. God says to look to him for strength and comfort.
No matter what we see happening, God is on his throne. He is in control. He
promises to be with us as our stronghold, or haven of safety. He challenges us
to look at all he has done and then be silent. Sit still and contemplate the
power and majesty of God. You will then see God exalted among the nations,
exalted in all the earth. You will see this Almighty God as your fortress. Be
still, you are safe in God’s hands!
